ABOUT MOVILLE

Find out more about Moville. From it’s rich history to things to see & do in Moville and the surrounding areas.

Moville stands on the banks of the Foyle, nestled in a sheltered bay.

The town of Moville has been a popular tourist destination for many years and continues to be a very popular destination for visitors to this day.

General Montgomery, who was famous during the Second World War, was born in Moville.  His ancestral home was a hotel in the town until recently but it remains vacant now.

The Green, as it is known, was donated to the people of Moville by the late Bishop Montgomery. Visitors can have a calming and restful walk along the shore path from the Green.

Visitors can also walk along the shore to the village of Greencastle where you can visit the Castle ruins.

The castle in Greencastle was originally built by the Anglo-Normans which was built around 1300s.  The castle is also known Newburgh.  There is also a more modern Martello Tower which was built around 1800 to prevent Napoleon invading.

The famous Cooley Cross and Graveyard lie just to the south of Moville.  Cooley Cross can be dated as far back as the 5th Century. St. Patrick is claimed to have founded this site.

Visitors can visit Kinnego Bay, a short distance west of Moville. Kinnego Bay is a delightful secluded sandy bay sheltered by cliffs.

Many ships foundered at Kinnego Bay.  The most notable ship was from the Spanish Armada, the La Trinidad Valencia, which foundered in 1588.

It has been said that is why we have so many dark haired locals, all descended from the survivors of the wreck!
